The good folks over at Burgundy Wave (http://www.burgundywave.com/) recently mentioned that the Colorado Rapids were retiring their alternate Colorado flag-based yellow kit (affectionately known by me and a few pals as the “fightin’ bananas" kit) and releasing their new digs for 2017 in February. The first Colorado flag-based alternate kit was blue, and with the second being yellow, it leaves one to wonder if the next will be to keep with the Colorado flag theme and make red the primary color.
I am a Rapids fan and season ticket member. As a graphic designer, I love jerseys/uniforms/kits for all sports. I’d argue that soccer kits are the most fun because they change so frequently and take some pretty big risks from time to time. So, I decided to take on the Rapids kit as a personal challenge. I started with the Colorado flag theme and making red the primary color. While I like the result, my good friend and fellow season ticket member immediately responded with, “RSL [Real Salt Lake]...yuck.” This is both hilarious and he’s dead on about the similarity to the RSL kits (and you have to love his die hard commitment to the rivalry). So I pulled back on the red and returned to blue and yellow on a few as well. Personally, I love the Rapids primary colors (Maroon and Light Blue) so I wanted to design to that color scheme, and I finished with a completely off the tracks design I jokingly call, “Rapids Dark”.
In any case, it’s a fun personal project, and I enjoy the results. I’m open to your feedback in the comment section too! Do you have a favorite? What would you change? Any other dream color schemes for an alternate Rapids kit?
